So saddened to hear of Mel's passing! He was a special light in the world and is now adding his spark to the next. Quick-witted, talented, creative, funny (always), a supportive friend, and, even in down times, would lift others up. And he loved his family! So proud of his children and never without Fran!! He was the same whenever and wherever you saw him!
We will miss him very much - not having the ability to pick up the phone and catch up, but know we will see him again.
Much love to Suze, Shark, and Fran. We will cherish the memories.

Mel Shaw Memories.
When I was Program Manager at channel two in Calgary, I hooked up with this multi/talented total “Dean of Music”, Mel Shaw. He taught me about how the industry worked in 1973 and he kept on teaching me up to 2020.
He gave our station CFAC-TV a copy of the “Solid Gold” recording of one of his Stampeder triumphs, that has hung with me all these years.
We teamed up in the 80’s and managed to get the Stampeders to play as the guest stars at the annual Calgary Stampede. They were a monster hit with the the crowds.
I hooked up with another Albertan David Close, a Medicine Hat native, to make our own mark in music. We produced hundreds of hours in music variety productions with symphony orchestra talent shows like “The Palace”, Michel Legrand and Friends, live at the Forum, and Super specials in Montreal, Edmonton, and Vancouver. Our lessons on music rights and clearances were taught to us by Mel Shaw.
My favourite times with Mel were with he and his constant companion Fran. I’m reminded of a great show we did with Tina Turner. Her piece “What’s love got to do with it!” pretty much sums up a reason for Mel’s success as a man, a husband, a friend, and a genius. He loved his family, and his industry, and his country. Love had everything to do with his 82 years here on planet earth.
Mel was born in Banff. My young son Jesse just delivered us a new Grand-daughter in Canmore, 15 minutes down the road, just after Mel went to heaven. The Lord taketh and the Lord giveth all life. Heaven has a new talent scout in heaven. Don’t tell us there is no music in heaven. He will be royalty I’m sure, and Mel will never need “royalties” again.
Wendell Wilks and R. David Close.

Hi Fran , Shark and Susan , I am very sad to hear about Mel , he was on my mind for the last couple of weeks and was going to call as soon as we got moved . I hope his passing was painless and I look forward to seeing him on the other side . I am very disappointed in the lack of recognition he deserved from the music industry and the lack of respect he deserved from the members of the Stampeder's who would have been nothing without him . I will miss Mel and my heart goes out to you all . Love and light ! Peter

My condolences go to Mel's wife Fran, daughter Susan, and son Shark. Back in the eighties I took vocal lessons from the original lead vocalist of The Stampeders, Van Louis. As far back as I can remember, Van has raved about how Mel was the brains behind the success of that band. Van eventually introduced me to Mel, and I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with and be mentored by him. I will be forever be indebted to him for everything he has taught me.

Dear Fran, Dave, and Susan
I am truly saddened by this news and offer my sympathies to you and your extended families.
What will remember fondly about Mel was his boundless enthusiasm. It never wavered and was often used to inspire and encourage others.
I'm recalling in particular his acceptance speech in 1990 upon being presented with the Walt Grealis Award. That segment of the awards ceremony is appended below for those who wish to view it. On a night he was being honored for a lifetime of many great achievements, Mel spent most of the speech thanking others and finished by saying he wanted to accept his award on behalf of all the undiscovered and unknown singers and songwriters waiting for their first break to encourage them to persevere.
It wasn't easy re-watching this speech yesterday upon learning of Mel's passing but it is a wonderful memory of a unique and inspiring person. Mel was all that and we are all fortunate for the opportunity to have known him.

I can't tell you how saddened I was to here of Mel's passing. Always energetic, always enthusiastic, he was a pleasure to speak to on the phone and I will miss him dearly.
Mel was a Canadian Musical Pioneer, who could sit on either side of the "desk". He had the ability to see the BIG picture and he was never afraid of the hard work or obstacles that came his way. He set his goals and his achievements speak for themselves.
Mel's legacy will be firmly planted in the Canadian Music Industry for years and years to come.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Mel Shaw was not only a true gentleman; he was smart, creative, kind, funny - and as we all know, always in pursuit of the next grand idea!
I met Mel just when he was beginning to enjoy the higher echelons of success. And even then, to me, a novice songwriter, wet behind my ears, he was unfailingly encouraging. That was Mel. He never stopped being a fierce supporter of people like myself, who work under the radar of celebrity success, caught in the trenches in what is too often, a very cruel game we call the music business. For me and I’m sure countless others, Mel Shaw was a real and true friend, loyal, always so interested in what we were up to musically and again, always full of praise. His opinions and advice when given, were precious - invaluable wisdom drawn from his vast experiences as a record producer, publisher and executive at the highest positions.
What a tremendous spirit and force of energy!
I fondly remember a dinner in Nashville where he kept us all captivated by his stories, his ambitions and his dreams for the entire evening. Of course at the end of which there was a second helping of bread pudding! Rest well, Mel, my friend - rest well. You’ve earned it.

Mel was first and foremost a trailblazer in the Canadian Music Industry therefore a huge loss for Canada. On a personal level he was a close friend, manager and mentor to me. He was a kind, understanding and intelligent soul, always had the most positive disposition and believed in peoples talents at times more than they believed in themselves. Mel meant so much to so many people over the years, he will be missed and never forgotten .
