Obituary of Joseph Toews

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Born in Labrouqurie, Manitoba on June 4, 1931; Joseph went to be with his Lord,

on Saturday, September 18, 2021. He was predeceased by his wife Nita; son

Don; son-in-law Darren Currie; and 14 siblings. Joe will be lovingly remembered

by his daughter Esther Currie; daughter-in-law Darlene Toews; grandchildren Jeremy Adam, Ryan (Amber) Currie, Alicia (Kyle) Jacobs, Joshua (Joanna) Toews, Jonathan (Nikki) Toews, Rebecca (Stephen) Luff; great-grandchildren Katheryn, Chayton, Eli, Liam, Brody, Grace; as well as his sister Dorothy (Art) Sobering and numerous other family and friends.

Joe worked for Reimer Express Lines his whole career, starting as a driver in Winnipeg as a young man. His strong work ethic, focus, perseverance, persistence and people skills led him   to management positions in Regina, Montreal and back to Winnipeg where he ended his career due to health issues.

After retiring from Reimer Express Lines Joe and Nita moved back to Regina to be close to their children. They loved to travel together on bus trips and in their Leisure van cruising through North America, Mexico and Alaska! Joe and his “sweetie” met and made many friends across many continents. Joe also enjoyed painting, attending church, attending multiple Bible studies in a week and walking in God’s creation. His enjoyment of walking and meeting people led him almost daily to Wascana park where he met and conversed with everyone that crossed his path.  If they didn’t want to talk he would smile and tell them “God loves you”.  He shared stories of sitting and listening to people's stories of struggles where he would encourage and pray with them, he genuinely cared for those he met. He loved his one liners, “keep smiling, it looks good on you”, “remember that God loves you” and “we’re off like a herd of turtles” just to name a few. He could be depended on to greet you with a hug and an encouraging word.

In the past  several months Joe knew his body was weak and failing but his mind was clear.  He always asked how the grandchildren and great grandchildren were doing and said that he was praying for them. He still shared many adventures and experiences from his life, I just wish we could remember them all. In his last week he said, “I guess I am in the Lord’s hands”, and he is now walking with his Lord along with his sweetie.  We will miss him immensely but we, his family and those he met along the way, were blessed because he was a part of our lives. As Joe always said when he left. “God Bless”.  Along with a hug.
