Obituary of Minnie Hilderman

Please share a memory of Minnie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Minnie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 in Strasbourg, SK at the age of 96. She is predeceased by her husband David; parents Alex and Sophia and step mom Mary; Special granddaughter Darla; brothers John and Fred. Minnie will be lovingly remembered by her children Ray (Terri), Darlene, Don (Lynn) and Lorne (Darlene); grandchildren Dawne (Jay), Ryan (Claire), Tricia (Heath), Tanielle (Dennis), Perry, Spencer and Corey; great grandchildren Josh, Alyssa, Mya, Rayna, Thad, Macy, Matthew, Liam, Nathan, Paisley, Camden, Quinn, Justin and Jake; siblings Matilda, Liz, Flo (Mike), Norman, Allan, Diane and Barbara, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Our mom, Minnie, was born to Alex and Sophia (nee Scherle) in the Southey area on August 12, 1922.  Mom was the second eldest of four children born to Alex and Sophia. Matilda was the oldest, then came Mom followed by John and Fred. At the age of 5, Minnie’s mom passed away and she took on many responsibilities at a young age. Her father remarried to Mary Borger and they had 6 children: Norman, Liz, Flo, Allan, Diane and Barb. Minnie and her family moved to many places to live. She worked hard at home and off the farm. She also enjoyed her school years with her friends and liked to tell stories about those days. She met our father Dave Hilderman, not long after, he was drafted to serve in the Army in Victoria.  He came home from the Army to marry the love of his life, Minnie Schaeffer on February 12, 1943 at the Fraser farm west of Strasbourg. They both returned to Victoria for three years so that Dad could complete his service. In 1946 they moved to the home farm of Dad’s parents. This was the beginning of a life-long farming career during which they raised four children: Ray, Darlene, Don and Lorne. Our Mom was a very hard worker and true farm wife who took pride in keeping a nice home, gardening and being a wonderful cook. She loved her family and that was her priority.  Mom especially loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. She loved snuggling and rocking the babies and always enjoyed giving and receiving hugs and kisses no matter how old they were.  Mom and Dad enjoyed their retirement in Strasbourg and winters in Mesa Arizona where they spent many happy times with friends and family. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Duval, SK. Interment will follow in Duval Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Minnie’s memory may be made to Last Mountain Pioneer Home Foundation, PO Box 369, Strasbourg, SK, S0G 4V0.
