We are shocked and saddened to learn of Ormond's death. He was a close friend for many years in High School and University and especially through church and Young People's groups. And, he was my best man at our wedding!
We are sorry that we lost touch as the years went on, but have never forgotten what a good friend he was. I so wish I could have sat down with him recently to catch up in his development and renew our friendship! He was wise, funny, perceptive, caring, supportive, and of course, gifted musically. We have all lost a very precious person!
Our condolences to Terry, Sheila and family and others who, like us, mourn his loss.

To Ormand's family and friends,
I was so very sorry to read of the death of the unmatchable Ormand. It is many years since I have seen him, as I have lived outside of Regina for many years, and only returned a few months ago. Nevertheless I have very fond memories of Ormand from Central High School, and from Campbell Collegiate where we both taught in the early sixties.
It was only a short few years that we were there, but Ormand was a joy to work with, and he left an indelible impression on me, and more important, on his students.
I enjoyed reading about his notable career, and wish that we had known each other and worked together longer. I mentioned him to a younger friend recently and of his death, and she exclaimed, "Oh, I loved Mr. McKague. He was such an excellent teacher, and such fun. I will never forget him." I am sure that she is far from being alone in remembering the positive and joyful impact that Ormand had on so many students, family and friends. His sparkle lit up many lives.
With warm memories of a special man, Carol Johns Zakaib

Ormand's name came back to me this month as I work on a project related to anti-apartheid solidarity by the Canadian trade union movement in the 1980s. As a student at Sheldon Williams I remember his history classes as bringing history to life and I believe influenced me direction into a life in the Cdn labour movement and internationalism. He was remarkable.

Terry and Sheila
Sad to read the wonderful obituary of your dear brother. I'm so glad that
through you, I met this happy, amazing man.
I remember an amusing day spent with Ormand and a rather exasperated Terry
as I tried to install some grab bars for the cantankerous guy who didn't need them
or want them. I think his major concern was about the aesthetics of his shower.
Frustrating for sure but Terry soldiered on and we completed the task.
My best to you, Sheila and Terry, and your kids.

Terry and Sheila - We were sorry to learn of Ormond's passing. Although we did not know him well, the times we did meet were always enjoyable, filled with sincerity, and wit. He truly was a remarkable person in following his aspirations.
Our thoughts are with you, and we look forward to attending the gathering here in Saskatoon.

Years ago, when I was in my twenties and Ormond in was in his forties, he gave me a ride from Saskatoon to Regina. We weren't on the highway long before he looked over at me and said "Tell me your life story." That drive was enjoyable and passed quickly. Even though our paths have not crossed for decades, I often think of Ormond. He was a mentor to many like me who were, and are, trying to make the world a better place.
I can still hear his voice and wonderful laugh.
Condolences from Vancouver,
Monica Jones

Terry and Sheila:
So sorry to hear of Ormond's death. He was one of my favourite Winnipeg-related people. Amongst other things, I have fond memories of:
* helping him load a lamp into the vehicle he was driving on his move to Montreal,
* dinner parties when he lived with Anni and Keith, and for other occasions in Winnipeg, including his departure,
* visiting him in his Regina apartment,
* discussing his attempts to learn French, especially when he was in Montreal, and
* his 70th birthday party at your place in Regina, where I took pictures (with sometimes-strict instructions from Ormond).
I can't get to any of the events to honour and remember him, as I'm getting both knees replaced today and won't be able to travel for a while. However, if you'd like me to find photos from my extensive collection of Winnipeg memorabilia, or the birthday party, let me know. I'd love to contribute however I can. Meanwhile, I'll remember the great discussions we had, Ormond's humour and humanity, and his friendship. I'll also go back to his Racism in Canada book, given its extreme relevance these days.
Thanks for all you did for Ormond in these last years of his life. Trust that others are supporting you now. Sending a big hug from New York City.

Ormand played a major role in my philosophy towards education. When I graduated in 1969 he asked me if I had a "goal" for my classroom. I replied that I hoped to teach in a classroom that "was 40% cognitive, 40% affective with a 20% concentration on the psychomotor domain". I finished my spiel feeling some what smug that I had used lots of educational jargon when Ormond brought me back down to earth by saying simply "do you give a shit if the kids are happy" ?
It was like the Emperor's clothes all fell off. For the next 31 years, until I retired, having a "happy" classroom where kids were safe to challenge and learn became my focus.
I have had countless former students tell me that I was their favourite teacher. Much of the credit for that success should go to a wonderful mentor named Ormond McKague.
