Obituary of Robert Roy Grier

ROY GRIER 1920 – 2017 We are greatly saddened by the passing of Robert Roy Grier at the age of 96 in Regina on March 15, 2017. Left to celebrate his life are his five children; David (Lorraine) and their children Rachel (Micah) Friesen, Mitch, Jennifer (Jeremy Engele), and Peter; Lex (Kathy) and their children Megan (Matt Nicholson) and Robert (Matt Kjargaard); Lenore (Bert) Bewcyk and their children Laura (Barclay) Dahlstrom, Julia, and Amy; Michael (Judy) and their children Christopher, Jason (Laura Mitchell), Callie (Marcus) Zerr, and Vanessa; and Tim (Yuri) and their children Lisa and Emmy; and five great grandchildren. Roy was born on the farm west of Ogema where he lived and worked for 89 years except for approximately four years when he served Canada in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW2. In 1944 his aircraft was shot down over Romania where he was imprisoned until Romania was liberated. See “The Roy Grier Story”, http://youtu.be/19T8l3G2juc). In 1945 he returned to Ogema to farm and enroll in the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. His university education was cut short by bad weather which kept him on the farm until late in the fall preventing him from returning for his fourth year. Instead he went to Sudbury ON to find work for the rest of the winter. There he met his future wife, Ruth Ganton, whose father was the doctor in Ogema at that time. They were married November 11, 1950 and were together until her passing in July 2012. Roy was active in the Ogema United Church serving on its board and teaching adult Sunday school. He also served on other community organization boards including the Credit Union and the Co-op. The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the loving and compassionate care Dad received at Gardiner Point Care Home where he spent his last days. A Memorial Service for Roy will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Ogema Heritage Hall in the Rink Complex, Ogema, SK. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
