Obituary of Forrest Holmes
Please share a memory of Forrest to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Forrest Lewis Holmes
Forrest was born in Lac Vert, Saskatchewan, on May 31, 1929 and was escorted to Heaven on October 18, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Mildred; his loving wife Shirley; his sisters, Lorraine and Hazel; and by his great granddaughter Lily Rae and his niece Sherry Lee. Forrest is lovingly remembered and missed by his children: Rick (Colleen) Holmes, Donelda (Earl) Bremner, Wade (Josephine) Holmes; and by his 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. He is lovingly remembered and missed by his sister Bev (Clarence) and by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Forrest was born to Henry and Mildred Holmes. In 1949, at age 19, he quickly became the man of the family when Henry died. He managed the farm and supported his mother and sisters. He began working on neighbouring farms and at the Star store in Melfort. In 1952, Forrest met and married his love, Shirley. They settled in Meskinaw where Forrest worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Parish & Heimbecker, and the United Grain Growers – until 1962 when he began a livestock trucking business. Forrest trucked potash out of Esterhazy and fuel out of Regina where he also worked as a caretaker at Credit Union Central and for the apartment complex where they lived. In the spring of 1976, Forrest joined the AA family, where he received and gave much support over the years, (2016 marked 40 years of sobriety, a milepost that he was very proud of). Forrest was known for his great, steadfast faith in Jesus Christ and for his loyal friendship, integrity, compassion, and quiet sense of humour. He loved family gatherings and attended the Nichols’ Family Reunion in 2016. He enjoyed great food, fishing, friends (of which he had many), woodworking, gardening, bird watching, berry picking, and a good game of crib. He lived at the Golden Prairie Home, in Indian Head, for his last months. The family is deeply appreciative of the caring nurses and staff there. They are also thankful for the love, support and prayers of family and friends. A Celebration of Forrest’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Forrest’s children request that donations be made to the Saskatchewan Division of Mental Health, an organization that Forrest cared very much about.
