Obituary of Dorothy Florence Young

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with deep sadness that the family of Dorothy Florence “Flo” Young announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the age of 86 years.  Flo is lovingly cherished by her daughter, Shannon Zerr (Randy), grandchildren Devin (Samantha) and Jason; and daughter, Tammy Baier (Brent) and grandchildren Nicholas (Emily) and Shae-Lynn.  Flo is also survived by her siblings Grace Harty, Lorne Archibald, Doug Archibald (Martha), Sandra Schmidt, Neil Archibald (Kathy), and Beth Bartsch (Uwe); sisters-in-law Marti Young and Pat Horsley; relatives Deenie and Jim Wyatt; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Flo was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Archie; daughter Sheri-Lynn; parents Ashton and Dorothy; step-mother Helen; sister Sally Polichuk; sister-in-law Florence Archibald; and brothers-in-law Terry Polichuk, Joe Schmidt, Joe Harty, Ron Young and Al Horsley.

Mom was a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and worked at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford.  After marrying Dad and having children of their own, she decided that staying at home raising her children was what she loved and, then while doing so, also became a caregiver for other families’ children.  Mom was the quiet and unassuming leader of our family.  The career path she chose and the caregiver she was to so many, demonstrates her character and what an amazing person she was.  Flo was an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, she enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzles and crosswords, playing Scrabble and especially going to garage sales.  She loved her daughters immensely but having grandchildren took this love to a whole new level of joy.  She was always excited and very proud to watch her four grandchildren whether it be babysitting them or attending their various sports events, school plays, concerts, and dance recitals.  As her grandchildren became adults, she took delight and interest in hearing about their lives, relationships, and work interests.  She enjoyed all of our get togethers, but Christmas was always the main event where she cooked, baked and spoiled us all.  We will miss our sweet, kind Mom, Grandma and Sister tremendously, but we know she is at peace which brings us peace as well.

Honouring our Mom’s wishes, there will be a private family service held at a later date.  The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Wintergreene Estates and the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre unit 2-5.
