August was born at Wordsworth, SK. He attended Wabash school and then high school in Willmar. Following this, he attended business school in Regina. While in Regina, August met his wife Janet. For the first six years, he sold drafting supplies before starting his career at Sears as the furniture buyer and then assistant manager of the Transportation. After retirement, August took up wine making and gardening until Nancy married Jeff, then he went back to his roots at the farm helping Jeff. August left the farm again when Janet retired so they could spend some time together. After Janet passed away, August enjoyed his garden and doing a bit of traveling until he had health issues.
