Obituary of Norman James Sluth
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved “Pop”, Norman James Sluth on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at the age of 96. He was born December 31, 1926 on a farm near Webb, SK. Norman was predeceased by his dear wife of 70 years, Ureta (nee Ferris); father, John Sluth; mother, May Sluth (nee Cleveland); sister, Ida Eliason (and her husband Ray); brother, Chris (and his wife Lorraine); and daughter-in-law Connie Sluth. Norman is survived by his children, Murray, Gerald (Janice), Lesley (Lyle) Rode, Kelly (Helen), Graham (Kelly); grandchildren, Darren, Rachelle (Brent) McCord, Kevin, Courtney (Chris) Rode-Lipinski, Carson (Alexa), Stephanie (Terry) McDonald, Dustin, Patrick, Amy (Micah) Backous; and great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Carter, Isla, Oliver, Wesley and Henry.
Norman was widely known as a generous, positive, easy-going, and at times silly person. He loved playing Scrabble, pool, chess, horseshoes and cards. Living to 96 with very good health was remarkable considering he weighed less than 2 pounds at birth. Norman’s mother kept him warm in a bread pan on the oven door through that cold winter.
Growing up on the farm he became a “jack of all trades”. In addition to farm work, over the years he owned and managed several businesses including a pool hall, car rental, battery shop, door and window installation, landscaping and real estate sign installation.
In the mid-1950’s, he began a personal study of the Bible and on August 11, 1956 he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He loved talking to people about the scriptures and one of his favourites was Revelation 21:3,4 which speaks of the time when there will no longer be sickness, sorrow, pain or death. When asked what the key is to a long and healthy life he would often reply “I just keep looking ahead”. He loved greeting people at his local Kingdom Hall in Swift Current and later in Regina, where he was fondly known as “Norman the Doorman”.
Pop touched people’s lives in a meaningful way and he will be lovingly remembered.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 via video conference, with interment at a future time.
In Loving Memory
Norman Sluth
