Obituary of Joan Mary Meyer
Joan Meyer
1942-2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Meyer of Regina, SK on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the age of 81, after a short but valiant battle with cancer.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Ron; granddaughter Krista Walterson; parents Ernest and Emma Teske; and parents-in-law Tony and Mary Meyer. She is survived by daughter Sandra (Laurie) Walterson; son Stephen (Hannah) Meyer; and brother David (Sheila) Teske. Joan is also survived by her grandchildren Alyssa (Nick) Crompton, Aric Walterson, Anthony, Daniel, and Aaron Meyer; and great-granddaughter Everly Crompton; as well as niece Rebecca Teske and nephew Michael Teske.
Joan was born in Weyburn, SK on May 13, 1942. She spent the first 5 years of her life living in a rustic one-room cabin on the Brokenshell Community Pasture #1. The family moved to the farm near Lang when Joan was old enough to go to school. Joan left the farm at age 18. She spent one year studying nursing in Saskatoon, then chose to return the following year to Regina for teacher’s college. In July 1962, Joan married Ron, settled in Regina, and started her family. They were married for 59 years until Ron’s death in 2022. Along with family, faith was important to Joan. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Martin de Porres and member of the CWL.
Joan had many interests and hobbies. Her passion for genealogy left a treasure trove of family history for both sides of her and Ron’s family. One example was the family history book she wrote for the Oschefski family reunion in 1995. In another instance, Joan helped a relative who was adopted find her birth family.
Joan had a lifelong love of learning, going back to university later in life to finish her degree in library science and even taking a class alongside her daughter. When trying to arrange an outing or family event, we often had to work around the weekly webinars on various subjects that she just couldn’t miss. This love of learning is another gift she gave to her family.
We would like to thank the staff in Unit 3B and the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital for their care and support for both Joan and her family. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at St. Martin de Porres Parish, 4720 Castle Road, Regina, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Joan to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan or the Canadian Cancer Society.
