Obituary of Cory William Morrison

Please share a memory of Cory to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dad.  Son.  Brother. Uncle. Coach. Cousin. Friend.  These are just some of the words to describe our beloved Cory William Morrison, who passed away at the age of 47, due to complications from diabetes and kidney disease. We are comforted in the fact that his struggle is now over, and in the end, there is peace.

Cory was the second child born to Bill and Marilyn Morrison, welcomed by big sister Tracy, and followed only 11 months later, by little sister Cindy.  Now the family was complete with the 3 Musketeers – Tracy, Cory, Cindy (say that 3 times fast!)  From the beginning, Cory showed his loving heart, always taking care of and protecting his sisters, most especially Cindy.  They had a bond that was special beyond words.   He also loved his animals.  At first there was Buddy, then Ryker, who we know brought him so much joy.  And when Tracy met Kevin, and Cindy met Larry, Cory got the brothers he never had.  Both Kevin and Larry were close to his heart and they shared many good times and laughs.  As well, he made a few very close, long lasting friends - Kris Schoenhofen, Bob Desalauriers and Blake Beaudin.  We know that Cory’s friend list is long, and we are most grateful for everyone’s presence in his life.

Cory was also a devoted uncle to his three nieces and one nephew. No matter what happened in their lives, or how far he had to travel to see them, he was always interested in everything they did and everything they accomplished.  Nobody was more proud than Uncle Cory. We know that this completely endeared him to Sean, Ally, Paige, and Bree.  He also took great interest in knowing what his extended family was up to.  He was especially close to cousins Dale Harvey and Laurie (Gilfoil) Lardeur.  As you can see, he was a total people person and loved all his family members so very much.

He attended St. Catherine Elementary School, then Miller High School and the University of Regina for Pre-Journalism.  He was wicked smart and could be counted on to recall any fact about sports at any time.  He had such a gift for statistics, it was truly amazing.   He was so good at so many jobs:  first at Cookie’s Roller-Skating Rink, then at HMV Records, followed by EMI, next scouted for the Notre Dame Cougars, then scouted for the WHL’s Prince George Cougars, worked as a hockey referee and lastly, at the Twin and Cooperators Arenas.  Once again, this is where his big heart shone, making many friends far and wide, wherever he worked.

When Cory met Deana, this gave him the chance to be what he always wanted – a Dad.  He would often say that Ethan was the best thing that ever happened to him and we are thankful he got to experience being a parent Cory and Ethan had many special trips together, one special trip to note was when they got to see the Blue Jays play in person.  He really was present in every aspect of Ethan’s life, be it taking him to preschool or practice, Cory dedicated his life to Ethan.

From the very beginning, anyone who met him knew that he had double passions – Music and Sports.  He could be known to belt out an out of tune music lyric or two when he was feeling particularly jazzy and attending any concert he could, with whomever was willing to join him. He showed his passion for all kinds of sports and played hockey, soccer, bowling, figure skating and ball from an early age, and then traveled with Dad, Mom, Ethan, and friends to various sporting events. In recent years, he also ran and participated in numerous Fantasy Sports drafts.  He had so much fun predicting and, sometimes winning, these contests.  He gathered friends far and wide in the sporting community.  Then, as Ethan grew up, he and Cory bonded through coaching whatever sport Ethan was also passionate about. He was an amazing coach and we know that this is particularly where he will be missed.

And then there’s Cory’s gift of sense of humour.  Anyone who knew Cory, knew that he could light up a room with his stories, jokes, and nicknames. To his friends, he was “Como”, to us he was “Uncle Coco”.  He loved making fun of situations and people, often at their expense.  However, we know that this was all done in love and good fun.  Como was a top-notch entertainer and we will miss his wicked wit.

There will be no funeral service, for Cory, at this time, due to Covid Restrictions. However, one will be planned tentatively for late summer to celebrate Cory’s life.  If you wish to donate on Cory’s behalf, please do so to the Canadian Diabetes Association or simply wear anything Boston Bruins and raise a glass  (or a Diet Coke Super Big Gulp) to our special guy.

Cory, we love you and miss you and look forward to seeing you again.
