Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Susan Jane Mercer passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Palliative Care, Pasqua Hospital, Regina, SK.

Susan was predeceased by her parents Ross Kingdon and Joan Kingdon (nee Pearce). She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 36 years, Jim Mercer; son Thaddeus Bourassa  (Barb) and their children Jackson and Madison; as well as daughters Kelly Atkinson (Colin) and their children Alexander and Clara, and Sarah Mercer-Brewster (Jason) and her children Amiya and Taylor; sisters Mona Gillies of Medicine Hat, AB, Shelly Perry of Antigonish, N.S. and Barbara Dekker of North Battleford, SK.

Susan lost her courageous 18-month battle with cancer on April 10, 2021. She was born in Regina in 1964 while her family resided in Fort Qu’Appelle. In 1973, they moved to Kindersley then to North Battleford in 1975. At age 15, Susan met the love of her life Jim Mercer. They dated through high school and were married in February 1985. Kelly was born later that year, “her honeymoon baby”. A move to Vancouver for education was followed by a move to Regina in 1988 where they raised their family for the next 30 years. Sarah was born shortly after this move, she was Susan’s “Christmas Break” baby.

Susan was a stay at home mom until the children started kindergarten. She briefly worked at Hallmark Cards, then as a preschool teacher for the next 30 years. She developed special relationships with literally hundreds of children and their families. She retired from Glencairn Preschool the fall of 2019 due to a cancer diagnosis.

Susan will be remembered for her deep love of her family, especially her grandchildren, her love of children and animals. It was not uncommon for her to bring home lost pets. Her deep love of nature was instilled in her as a young girl by her father. The unique relationship she developed with her preschoolers was life-long, staying in touch with many into adulthood and eventually teach the next generation. She was the wrestling mom for many kids through her daughter Sarah’s wrestling career.

She had a deep appreciation of music, both voice and clarinet. Susan sang competitively from a preteen, singing in her church choir for many years as well as being a member of the Regina Philharmonic Choir.

Susan will be deeply missed by all that knew her. Due to Covid-19, she requested no memorial service. There will be a family interment at the St James Cemetery in Condie, SK. Flowers will be respectfully declined. Susan asked that donations go to the Allan Blair Cancer Center Pediatrics Program at Pasqua Hospital, Regina, SK.

The Mercer family would like to thank the staff on 3A and 3B (Palliative Care and Oncology) for all their care. They are all Rockstars in their dedication and gentle care for those fighting cancer!
