Obituary of Jack Sures

SURES, Jack, C.M., S.O.M.,

November 20, 1934 – May 12, 2018

It is with sadness, but with gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Jack Sures. Jack was born in Brandon, MB. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Ann. Jack will be dearly missed by his loving wife Cara; his children Ben Sures (Shauna Stewart), Tania Sures and Nadine Sures; his sister Trudy Zimmerman and her sons Harlan and Michael and their families; his extended family Rhonda and Greg Brandt, Brad Driscoll; his cherished grandchildren Mila Sahmarani (Nadine’s daughter), Sara Brandt and Paul Brandt; his in-laws Richard (Joan) Wilson, Trevor (Terri) Wilson, Penny (Ron) Thibeault.

While at Michigan State University, Jack discovered his passion for art. He had a distinguished career, both in teaching and art-making, amassing many honours, the most recent being the Governor General’s Award for excellence in fine craft sponsored by the Sadie Bronfman Foundation. Jack never retired, and had no desire to do so. He was Professor Emeritus and a visiting artist at the University of Regina right up until his heart attack on April 2nd. Jack was able to indulge his other passions of golf, curling, travel and cooking. Jack will be remembered for his generous spirit, his love of family and friends, and his charismatic presence. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory may be made to the “Jack Sures Legacy Fund”, University of Regina, 3737 Wascana Parkway, Regina, SK S4S 0A2. Jack’s ‘send-off’ will be held in late August.
